shutter tieback - chestertown

This is one of a common class of tie-backs that trace their origin back to Great Britian. This particular tie-back graces a grand home in Chestertown, MD. The home was built across the street from the old Customs House and wharves by a British Merchant. The attic of the house is insulated with discarded packaging materials – London newspapers dated from the1740’s-60’s. It’s a pretty safe bet that the merchant builder dipped into his own wares to outfit his own home. In any event, this example with a heavily weighted tail and simple forged top is seen in many variations in many areas.
