American blacksmiths making the finest exterior shutter hardware
New Offerings

At Brandywine Forge we keep coming up with new stuff and new old stuff - mostly because we spend a lot of time studying early shutter hardware and listening to our customers’ needs and input.

This page represents some of the new old hardware we’ve decided to reproduce as well some totally new hardware that we designed to solve common installation situations.

All of the hardware shown here is made in our blacksmith shop and is unique to Brandywine Forge.  We design it, we make it, the hardware sells itself.

Colonial Revival Shutter Dogs

“Colonial Revival” explains a lot about the shutter hardware seen on many early homes.  The centennial celebration in 1876 was the first real recognition of historic structures in this country as such.  The Centennial was intended to showcase advances in American industrial technology to the world.  It was held in Philadelphia so Independence Hall & the Liberty Bell were proud attractions and received the appropriate facelifts.  The “Fair” was a great success and probably marked one of the first times America recognized its historic structures as the national treasures they have always been.

The 1880’s saw the introduction of many new styles of shutter hardware, for the first time much of it based on earlier historic patterns.  Much of the hardware currently seen on historic buildings was produced and installed in that timeframe.  Our Southern cities are rich in hardware of this genre –  replacements for earlier hardware stripped and used to make cannons and such during the Civil War.

The sesquicentennial (150 years - 1932) celebration held again in Philadelphia was a technologic bust, but turned patriotic and spurred interest in Colonial architecture.  Much of the new construction in the following decades incorporated Colonial elements.  Shutters and their hardware are a visible hallmark of the style.

The Charleston #807
A semi-hand forged piece from the late 1800’s and very common in Charleston.  Based on an 18th century example in the same town.
6 ½” h x 1 ¼” wide

The Propeller #857
Again, a semi-forged piece.  Stamped and rolled over the edge of the anvil.  Available in 5, 6 & 7” heights.  The smaller sizes common in Savannah.  Inspired by an earlier forging.

Sweet Violet #810
I’ve seen this pattern on several properties built in the 1930’s.  It’s nice with some bulk for visibility while its rolled tail adds three dimensionality.  I see this piece as just right for bungalows.

Stanley “S” #854
The first “production” S tieback.  This form was always difficult to form at the anvil, but the Stanley company made this simple forged piece in the late 1800’s.  It is the basis of many shutter dog patterns that followed 8” height
McKinney “S” #853
This “S” form of shutter dog was produced by the McKinney company, among others.  Common in the 1930’s on, this pattern is noted for the “penny foot” form at the top and bottom of  the scroll.  A nice detail that’s been dropped on most dog of more modern fabrication.

This is our “Storm Hinge” with a hand forged bevel.  First developed as a heavy functional hinge at an affordable price, it turns out most European shutter hinges were of the same simple pattern.  We’ve added a beveled option to our storm hinge in response to a number of jobs where they were installed and served beautifully.  A commonly seen pattern in early American barn door hinges.

We offer these hinges in 1 ½” & 2” widths and in lengths up to 30” – larger as custom.

Westport Style Hinge
We first made this piece as a custom shutter hinge for a 120 window residence in Westport Connecticut.  It’s a handsome termination and it’s definitely not Colonial.  Works well with Victorian, turn of the Century and contemporary shutters & gates. Item # 707

The hinge to the left shows a fully detailed Westport Hinge.  The end termination  is the same as shown above.  The incised parallel lines are a separate option, as is the full length bevel shown on this hinge

The Westport Hinge details can be added to any “Storm” hinge
Termination only:     Add  $8.00/pair
Incised Lines:           Add  $10.00/pair
Beveled Edge:          Varies by length

Storm Masonry Pintle

When installing functional storm shutters, quite a few customers are addressing a masonry structure.  Our Notched Female Pintle #307 has been very popular for brick & stucco installations.   Our new #308 “Storm” pintle offers the same advantages as the #307, but is less expensive.  The Storm pintle allows lag screws or Tapcon® type fasteners to be installed through its 9/32” holes – well away from the edge of the brick.

The pin diameter is ½” and will mate with any of our styles of heavy strap hinges.

Priced at $18.00/pair
Left & right hand specific

Rattail Shutter Bolt

This is an early form of the plate mounted shutter bolt.  The forged rattail “pull” is of an earlier pattern than the common “penny.”  This was a favorite pattern of my friend & mentor, the late Donald Streeter.

I had been looking for an early example for a few years, found them on an early law office right in my neighborhood – West Chester, PA

Item #’s 611 & 616

Sizes match 610 or 615

Add $5.00 for rattail option

New Shutter Ring Backplate Options

#904 Escutcheon Backplate

Based on 18th century lock Escutcheons, an optional backplate for our standard 1 ½” diameter shutter rings.  Since the rings are visible when the shutters are open, our #904 lets you dress up the shutter part you see.
3” h x 2” wide

#903 Narrow Backplate

A simple backplate to fasten your shutter rings.  Comes with standard 1 ½” shutter ring.  The backplate adds a little visual interest but it also keeps the ring off of the face of the shutter.  That not only protects the wood, but also – and more importantly – keeps the shutter ring from getting painted into the face of the shutter.
2 ¾” h x ¾” wide
