Shutter Locks > 603 - Heavy Shutter Hooks

These hooks don’t really lock the shutters, they’re used to hold them in the open position.

Very common on farm houses throughout eastern Pennsylvania and elsewhere, they were produced by local smiths.  An arc scratched into the surface of the building (or door for smaller hooks) below the attachment point for the hooks is lasting evidence of their use.  The hooks hang from the sill when the shutters are closed and, over time, the points scratch an arc into the face of the structure.  Such scribed arcs are proof that hooks were used and show both their length and attachment point on the window sill.

We hand forge these hooks of heavy 3/8” round steel and supply sturdy drive staples to attach the hooks. One advantage of the shutter hooks over tiebacks is that they’re easily engaged and disengaged (you don’t have to lean out of the window to release the shutters as with tiebacks) as the shutter is opened and closed.

They’re often used to hold Bermuda style shutters open.

We can attach screw eyes to the hooks as an
option to the standard staples – add $6.50 per pair
