Installation Situations > Window (or Door) Location

Two conditions can exist on any building:

  • The windows are essentially flush with the face of the structure
  • The windows are recessed within openings in the building (as is often seen with a stone, masonry, or brick building)

shutter installation - window flush

shutter installation - window recessed

Here the siding – whether it be wood, vinyl or masonry – does not protrude beyond the face of the casing which surrounds the window. No “offset” needs to be included to swing the shutter beyond the casing as it moves from the closed to the open position.

In this situation, the window and its casing are recessed within the masonry opening. When hardware is mounted to the casing, “Offset” must be considered to allow the shutter to clear the masonry when swung from the closed to the open position

A “flush” installation is pretty straight forward, the shutters just have to open and close like a door.

If the windows are recessed more variables come into play. The shutters must lay parallel to both the window and face of the building – that’s a rule. Therefore, you must consider the distance the shutter moves away from the face of the window to reach a position parallel to the face of the building – I refer to this distance as “ offset” and you’ll see the term often when looking at shutter hardware. Another consideration with recessed windows is the width of the window casing. As the shutters swing from closed to open there is a left-to-right movement of the shutter – I refer to this movement as “ throw”. The throw is built into the hardware and cannot exceed the width of the window casing, otherwise an offset hinge will hit the corner of the structure before the shutter can lay fully against the structure in the open position.
