Heavy Shutter Strap Hinges > 701 Series Forged Bevel Strap Hinge
Our 701 hinges are representative of the best early work. We hammer out a hinge blank. Hammering the blank results in subtle curved lines rather than the harsh straight lines of a machine cut hinge. It also allows us to hammer a heart, bean or round termination on the hinge. We then hand forge beveled edges along the length of the hinge. The bevel spreads the width slightly and accentuates the un-straightness of the hinge. This results in a very nice forged texture along the length of the hinge. I asked an older gentleman from South Carolina , a very knowledgeable and experienced restoration specialist, “why the bevel on the early hinges?”. His answer…”same reason as they hand-beaded the edges of hewn beams. It creates shadow lines. The shadow lines give three dimensionality and pulls your eye to the added care and detail of the original craftsman”.
